ANNAPOLIS, MD - The Johns Hopkins water polo team opened the 2010 campaign at the annual Navy Open this past weekend and picked up three wins in four matches. Hopkins earned wins over Diablo Valley Community College (10-7), Fordham (11-10) and Gannon (19-4).
Hopkins opened with a loss to the Northern Virginia (NOVA) club team, falling 11-6. Sophomore Alex Whittam (Hillsborough, CA/Sacred Heart Prep) and freshman Stephen Kingery (Moraga, CA/Campolindo) each scored a pair of goals to pace the Hopkins' offense. While in goal, senior Jeremy Selbst (Old Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) made eight saves and had six steals.
The Blue Jays rebounded with a win over Diablo Valley on Saturday afternoon. Senior co-captain John Barrett (Clarendon Hills, IL/Fenwick), junior Mark Strickland (Houston, TX/Strake Jesuit) and sophomore Ross Schofield (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) led the way in the second match with two goals apiece. Barrett had a pair of assists, while Selbst had three. In the goal, Selbst made 10 saves and had four steals to go along with his assists.
Against Fordham, Barrett poured in four goals and added two assists, while Whittam dished out four assists. Schofield and Kingery each had a pair of goals. Selbst finished with 12 saves and two steals. The Blue Jays held a slim one-goal lead over the Rams heading into the final period. Each team scored a pair of goals in the final eight minutes as Hopkins held on for the 11-10 win.
Hopkins turned in a dominating performance in its final match of the weekend, outscoring Gannon 19-4. Twelve different players scored for the Blue Jays, led by sophomore Gerrard Clark (Palo Alto, CA/Menlo School) with a hat trick. Selbst made nine saves with three steals in three quarters of action. Freshman Chance Fowler (Moraga, CA/Campolindo) played the final quarter and made six saves and grabbed two steals in his collegiate debut.
Hopkins returns to action at the Princeton Invitational September 11-12. Hopkins will face Iona and Cal Baptist on Saturday and Santa Clara and Fordham on Sunday.
