BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins volleyball team defeated Gallaudet, 3-1, in non-conference action Wednesday night at Goldfarb Gym. The Blue Jays improve to 2-2 on the year, while Gallaudet falls to 4-1.
Hopkins jumped out of the gates firing, winning the first set 25-18. The second set was a back and forth battle that was the most competitive of the match. The Blue Jays held the early lead, 8-4, before Gallaudet went on an 11-3 run to take a 15-11 lead. Hopkins fought back and eventually won the set, 27-25, on an Amelia Thomas kill. Gallaudet bounced back to win the third set, 25-19, before Hopkins took control in the fourth set to close out the match, 25-15.
The Blue Jays played a well-rounded match, with five players recording double-digit digs and four players recording seven kills apiece. Sophomore Becky Paynter posted her third double-double of the season with 30 assists and 12 digs. Senior KC Stingl led the Blue Jays in digs with 18.
The Bison were paced by sophomore Ann Whited, who tallied 17 kills and 13 digs. Sophomore Mari Klassen also recorded a double-double with 16 digs and 11 kills.
Hopkins returns to action this weekend at the Lynchburg Tournament in Lynchburg, Va. On Friday, September 10 the Blue Jays will face Lynchburg at 1 pm and Mary Washington at 7 pm. On Saturday they will square off against Randolph at 10 am and Johnson & Wales at 4 pm.
