WESTMINSTER, MD - Visiting Johns Hopkins broke open a close match with four straight wins from 165 to 197 and took seven of 10 matches overall as the Blue Jays knocked off host McDaniel, 28-12, in Centennial Conference wrestling action at the Gill Center Tuesday night. The win is JHU's fourth in the last six meetings with the Green Terror and the 16-point margin of victory is the Blue Jays' largest against McDaniel since a 28-5 win on January 12, 1965.
The Blue Jays (4-8, 1-0 Centennial) led just 12-8 entering the 165-pound match, but senior co-captain Eric Levenseller ignited the decisive run with a 10-2 major decision victory against Matt Peters. Senior Patrick Stanley followed with a 92-second pin of Chris Urps to make it 22-8 and junior Ben Finelli clinched the match and won for the fifth time in his last six matches with a 9-4 victory over Scott Forester at 184.
Sophomore Reid Mosquera added a 6-3 win over Will Yeo at 197 to make it 28-8 before McDaniel's Brock Glotfelty scored a 12-3 win over Rick Danilkowicz at 285 to account for the 28-12 final score. The win was the school-record 113th of Glotfelty's career.
Hopkins took two of the first three matches by decision as freshmen Ray Yagloski (125) and Duncan Crystal (141) scored 4-3 and 3-1 wins, respectively. Crystal took his match in overtime against Mike Tancredi as he scored a takedown 49 seconds into the first overtime period to win for the seventh time in his last eight matches.
A major decision by McDaniel's Tom Goretsas at 133 made it 6-4 after three bouts, but Johns Hopkins senior Rocky Barilla won by injury default at 149 to make it 12-4. A 9-1 win by Logan Yox drew the Terror (3-6, 1-1) within 12-8, but Levenseller followed with his team-best fifth major decision of the year to fuel the match-clinching run for the Blue Jays.
