CARLISLE, PA - Johns Hopkins was held to just 48 by host Dickinson as the Red Devils snapped a 12-game losing streak to the Blue Jays with a 59-48 win in Centennial Conference action Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays are now 4-13 overall with a 2-8 mark in the conference. The Red Devils, earning their first win over the Blue Jays since December 4, 2004, improve to 8-9 overall and 6-4 in the Centennial.
Senior John Alberici hit a bucket off the glass less than two minutes in to give Hopkins an early lead over Dickinson. The Red Devils answered with a jumper from Brian Gerney to tie the game and ignite a 13-0 run. Gerney fueled the run with eight points, including two three-pointers. Alberici broke a four-minute drought for the Blue Jays with another bucket in the paint and started a run that saw the Red Devils' lead dwindle down to one. Freshman Jaraad Rogers drained a pull-up jumper in the paint to cap the run and make it a 13-12 game with 8:09 to play.
Dickinson pushed its lead back to five with a pair of free throws from Matt Dolan and a Chris Barsanti layup. The teams traded trips to the free throw line over the 60 seconds and the Red Devils led 19-18 at 2:30. Pat Kearns hit a layup, followed by a free throw from Adam Honig to lead by four before a triple from junior Sean O'Connor cut it back to one. Honig had the final say for the half however, as he hit a 17-foot jumper with just 3.7 seconds on the clock to send Dickinson into the half with a 24-21 lead.
Coming out of the half, the Red Devils pushed out to an 11-point lead while their defense held the Blue Jays to just one free throw over the half's opening five minutes. Freshman Connor McIntyre hit a layup at 14:32 to make it a 33-24 game but that would be the only field goal for Hopkins over the next six minutes as Dickinson built its lead to 18 points. A jumper from McIntyre at 8:32 ended another drought for Hopkins as the freshman would score six of the Blue Jays next eight points to cut the deficit to 12.
A Dolan layup, followed by four straight points from Honig and the Red Devils led by 18 with 4:14 to play. Hopkins and Dickinson went back-and-forth for the next two minutes. Trailing 56-39 with 2:48 on the clock, Hopkins closed out the game on a 9-3 run to account for the 59-48 score.
McCarty was the lone Blue Jay in double figures, as he finished with 10 points and team-high four rebounds. Pat Kearns led the Red Devils with a game-high 14 points, while Dolan also chipped in 10. Hopkins shot just 34.1 percent from the floor, while Dickinson shot 47.4 percent.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, January 26 as Franklin & Marshall visits Goldfarb Gym. The Centennial Conference match-up is slated to tip-off at 8:00 pm.
