Hopkins Drops Muhlenberg, Falls to Ursinus in Centennial Wrestling

COLLEGEVILLE, PA - The Johns Hopkins wrestling team split a pair of Centennial Conference matches at Ursinus on Saturday as the Blue Jays fell to the host Bears, 29-12, before rebounding with a 43-9 win over Muhlenberg. Johns Hopkins now stands at 5-9 overall and 2-1 in the Centennial Conference.

Against Ursinus, the Blue Jays jumped to a 6-0 lead as freshman Ray Yagloski won his fifth straight match as he pinned LauraLee Lightwood Mater just over a minute into the second period. The Bears responded with four straight wins, including major decisions at 133 and 157, to take a 14-6 lead. Among the four losses for the Blue Jays in that run was a tough 4-1 setback for senior co-captain Rocky Barilla against defending Centennial Conference champion Connor McCormick at 149.

Senior Eric Levenseller drew the Blue Jays to within 14-9 with an 8-1 win over Bill Reick at 165 and classmate Patrick Stanley added a 4-1 win over Myles Tornetta at 174 to make it 14-12, but JHU was forced to forfeit at 184 and 197 and Ursinus' Bill Cornelly closed the match with a 7-2 win over Rick Danilkowicz to account for the 29-12 final score.

Five of the 10 matches in the Johns Hopkins-Muhlenberg match were won by forfeit with JHU taking four of the five. The Blue Jays also won four of the five matches actually wrestled with Jody Gowen's first-period pin of Patrick Gibson at 157 highlighting the action. Levenseller and Stanely both picked up wins - Levenseller with a 12-4 major decision against Jonathon Sternlicht and Stanley with a 7-1 win at 184 over Billy Sholly - to finish 2-0 on the day.

Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, January 29 when the Blue Jays host Washington & Lee at 1 pm in the final home match of the 2010-11 season.
