Hnatiuk Nets Game Winner

SWARTHMORE, PA - The #6 Johns Hopkins women's soccer team won a thriller Saturday evening when the Blue Jays defeated Swarthmore with a goal in the 87th minute to down the Garnet 3-2. The Blue Jays improve to 9-0 on the season, 3-0 in the Centennial Conference while Swarthmore falls to 6-4, 2-2 in the CC.

In the 24th minute, freshman Hannah Kronicktook a rebound off a shot that hit the post to put the Blue Jays up 1-0 but just 17 seconds later, Emma Sindelar scored the first goal allowed by a Hopkins goalie in 567:36 to tie the game. Kronick has now scored in all eight games that she has played in this year.

Senior Erica Sutergave the lead back to Hopkins getting the ball at the top of the box and making a play on the ball to beat a defender and put the ball into the back of the net. With the goal, Suter scored her 47th goal of the season to become Johns Hopkins all time leading scorer.

Hopkins would take the 2-1 lead into halftime.

With plenty of scoring chances for each team, the defenses held tough to keep the score set at 2-1 for most of the second half. The Swarthmore offense stepped up and had three near goals in a two minute span, but senior goalie Kristen Redsunmade an excellent save to keep the Garnet to one goal.

With just 9:08 to go in the game, Amber Famiglietti played a ball in front of the net and took advantage of a misplay to net a goal and tie the game at two. Taking a header off the corner kick , senior Jessica Hnatiukdrilled the ball into the top right corner of the net over the goalie to give the lead back to the Blue Jays, 3-2, with 2:15 left to play. Hopkins held possession of the ball for the remainder of the game to solidify the win.

Redsun got the win for the Blue Jays, playing all 90 minutes in net. She made three saves and allowed her first two goals of the season in the win.

Johns Hopkins will return to the field when the Blue Jays host CC foe, Franklin & Marshall at Homewood Field with the game time set for 7 pm.
