BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins volleyball team won both of its matches on the afternoon in the trimatch with Haverford and Frostburg State. The Blue Jays won their first match of the day against Haverford, 3-1, before defeating Frostburg State in the final match of the day, 3-1.
The Blue Jays got off to a good start of the day against Centennial Conference foe, Haverford, with a 3-1 win. Hopkins remains perfect in the CC with a 6-0 record while extending its winning streak to five matches and snapped a six-match losing streak to the Fords. Overall on the season, the Blue Jays are now 16-4.
The Blue Jays used a four-point run to open up the first set and take a 6-4 lead and be the closest the Fords would come to the Blue Jays in the set. Freshman Katie Schwarz kicked out a three-point run with a kill from classmate Mariel Metalios and give the Blue Jays a 13-8 lead. Freshman Kim Bronson extended the lead to 15-8 with a kill and helped the Blue Jays take a seven-point lead. Hopkins would continue to pull away not allowing the Fords to establish any type of run and easily rolled to a 25-14 victory in the first set.
Hopkins once again jumped out to a quick lead, 8-5 behind a kill from freshman Megan Schwarz. The Blue Jays continued to build on their lead, once again not allowing the Fords to establish an offensive run. The Blue Jays pulled away to a 21-14 lead forcing Haverford to call its second time out and scored two-straight points after the short break. The Blue Jays went on to win the second set, 25-17 behind a kill from Bronson.
Haverford came out in set three and established a 13-5 lead over the Blue Jays with six straight points. The Fords would pull away by as many as eight points before defeating Hopkins 25-16, handing the Blue Jays their first set loss at home.
Set four was reminiscent of the first two sets of the match with Hopkins building on an early lead and using several three and four point runs to close out the match with a 25-16 victory. A kill from Katie Schwarz at game point gave the Blue Jays the victory.
In their second match of the day, the Blue Jays dropped their first set to Frostburg State 25-23 after lead 20-17 late in the game. Throughout the entire set, the two teams battled point for point with neither team pulling away to more than a four point lead at any time. After the Blue Jays tied the game at 23 each, the Bobcats pulled away with two straight points to take the first set.
The second set started much like the first with both teams battling point for point before the Bobcats went on a eight-point run take a 12-6 lead. The Blue Jays would chip away at the lead using a couple two and three point runs until the put together a four-point stretch to tie the game at 18. Hopkins would eventually take a 23-22 lead before back-to-back kills from freshman Ellen Rodgers and Bronson secured the 25-22 victory for the Blue Jays.
The Blue Jays took control of the third set quickly and used six-straight points to lead the Bobcats 7-2. Hopkins used two more five-point runs to wrap up the third set, 25-14 and go into what proved to be the deciding fourth set up 2-1.
In the fourth and final set, neither team was able to pull away as neither team had more than a three-point lead at any given time. The Bobcats led for most of the first half of the set but Hopkins kept battling and eventually took the lead, 22-21. The Bobcats took the lead back, 23-22 but the Blue Jays were able to post three straight points and take the fourth set, 25-23.
Johns Hopkins returns to the court on Tuesday, October 18 when the Blue Jays host Dickinson at Goldfarb Gym with the game time set for 7 pm.
