GW Battles Back to Beat Johns Hopkins, 15-13

Oct. 19, 2011

BALTIMORE, MD - Visiting George Washington scored nine second-half goals to come from behind and beat Johns Hopkins, 15-13, in CWPA Southern Division action Wednesday night. The Blue Jays fall to 10-11 overall and 2-5 in the league, while the Colonials improve to 8-13 and 2-4 in the league.

Hopkins jumped out to a two-goal lead behind strikes from juniors Kielan Crow and Ross Schofield before GW got on the board with a five-meter goal from Nate Little. The Blue Jays got back-to-back goals from junior Alex Whittam to go up 4-1 but a Benjamin Kriegel goal with 1:30 to play made it a 4-3 game after the first quarter.

Ridvan Pehlivan cut the deficit to one with the first of his six goals on the night just 58 seconds into the second stanza. Hopkins answered with a man-up goal from senior Mark Strickland and an even-strength goal form Whittam. Little and Pehlivan then sandwiched a pair around a Crow goal and Hopkins led 7-5 with 1:48 to play in the half. Schofield pushed the Jays lead to three with his second of the night on a man-up, but Little answered for the Colonials and Hopkins led 8-6 at the break.

Coming out of the half, GW got back-to-back goals from Nick Scherma and Pehlivan to tie the match at 8-8 with 2:02 to play in the third. Schofield came right back for the home team, with a man-up goal to complete his hat trick. Twenty-eight seconds later, Hopkins led by two on a Mike McCreery goal. But Pehlivan scored consecutive goals in just over 50 seconds and the teams were tied at 10 after three quarters.

Little pushed the Colonials' run to three straight and gave the visitors their first lead of the match just 37 seconds into the fourth. Freshman Wes Hopkins tied the game with 4:33 to play, but the Colonials answered right away on a goal from Pehlivan to retake a one-goal lead. Brian Mojica and Little pushed the lead to three with goals just 35 seconds apart. Schofield potted his fourth goal of the night to cut the deficit to two, but the teams would trade goals over the final 80 seconds as GW won its second straight over Hopkins.

Schofield paced the Blue Jays with four goals and two assists, while Whittam had a hat trick and two helpers. Schofield eclipses the 50-goal mark for the second straight season. Freshman Danny Ovelar made five saves in two periods of work while classmate Scott Weigel had nine stops. Pehlivan and Little combined to score 11 goals for the Colonials, who got 12 saves from junior Cameron Illes. It is the first time the Colonials have beat the Blue Jays twice in the same season since 1996.

Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, October 22 at the Division III Eastern Championship as the top-seeded Blue Jays will face host Penn State Behrend in the first round. The match is slated for a noon start.
