Alex Whittam each scored a hat trick to lead Johns Hopkins to 1 0-3 win over Mercyhurst in the Division II-Division III Crossover Sunday at Penn State Behrend. The Blue Jays improve to 13-11 overall with the win as the three goals are the fewest allowed since an 8-3 win over Iona on September 11, 2010.
The match was tied 1-1 after the first quarter, but it was all Hopkins from there as the Blue Jays surrendered just two more goals through the final three quarters. Freshmen Danny Ovelar and Scott Weigel combined to make 13 saves in the match while allowing just three goals.
Whittam and finished with three goals on six shots, while Crow also had three goals, one assist and two steals. Freshman Wes Hopkins swiped four steals and drew a pair of ejections. Junior Ross Schofield chipped in a pair of goals and a pair of assists while also swiping three steals.
Hopkins returns to action on October 29 as the Blue Jays travel to Annapolis to take on Navy in the Jays' regular season finale. The CWPA Southern Division match is slated for an 11:00 am start.
