COLLEGEVILLE, PA - The Johns Hopkins volleyball team cruised to its fourth straight victory and third straight Centennial Conference win with a 3-1 defeat of Ursinus Saturday afternoon by scores of 25-15, 25-18, 21-25, 25-13.
With the win, the Blue Jays move to 14-4 on the season and remain a perfect 5-0 in the CC while the Bears even their record to 9-9 and fall to 1-5 in the Centennial.
In the opening set, the Blue Jays jumped out to an early lead with three straight points before the Bears came back and tied the game at three. After a kill from freshman Meagan Donohoe, the Blue Jays took a two-point lead, 7-5, which is the closest the Bears would get for the rest of the set. Johns Hopkins took its biggest lead of the set behind a three point run to push its lead to 23-13. The Blue Jays took the first set 25-15 with a kill from freshman Megan Schwarz.
The Blue Jays and Bears battled for most of the first half of the second set until the Blue Jays pulled ahead to a 12-11 lead. Johns Hopkins used a four point run to push its lead to 17-13 and rolled to a 25-18 win to go up two sets to none.
Ursinus pulled out a 25-21 win in the third set to force a fourth game. The Bears led for the whole set despite a four-point comeback late in the game to pull the Blue Jays to within two, 22-20. A kill from Gina Powers gave Ursinus the 25-21 win.
Hopkins opened the fourth and final set with five straight points to take a 8-4 lead it would not give up. The Blue Jays would continue to push hard and lead by as many as eight points before the Blue Jays scored five straight behind the serving of freshman Anne Cohen to seal the victory for the Blue Jays, 25-13.
Senior Melissa Cole and Donohoe led the offense with 14 kills each, while freshman Mariel Metalios handed out at a match high 29 assists, junior Becky Paynter was close behind with 28. Cohen led the defense with a team high 20 digs. Johns Hopkins will return to action next Saturday when the Blue Jays host a tri-match featuring Frostburg State and CC foe, Haverford starting at 11 am.
