HARRISBURG, PA - The Johns Hopkins wrestling team continued its early-season schedule against top competition on Saturday, November 12 as the Blue Jays competed in the Wrestle For a Cure Duals in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The Blue Jays took on Division II American International and nationally-ranked Division III teams York (17th) and Ithaca (4th). Hopkins fell to American, 24-16, in its closest match of the day before dropping a 27-13 decision to York. The Blue Jays closed with a tough 33-6 loss against the fourth-ranked Bombers.
Coupled with last week's season-opening action at the Terrapin Duals, the Blue Jays are now 1-6 on the year with all seven matches against Division I, Division II or nationally-ranked Division III teams.
Freshman Paul Bewak (125) and sophomore Matt Fusaro (157) led the way for the Blue Jays on Saturday as both went 3-0 against strong competition. Bewak picked up major decisions over American's Andrew Chase (10-2) and York's Joey Giaccio (8-0) before scoring an impressive 5-0 victory over Ithaca's Dominick Giacolone.
Fusaro scored three victories by decision on the day. He opened with a 4-1 win over American's Noah Kail and added a 9-4 win over Thomas Demetrio of York. He then closed his day with a 9-2 victory over Ithaca's Brett Sanko that drew the Blue Jays to within 10-6, but the Bombers scored one pin, one forfeit, two major decisions and a regular decision in the final five bouts to secure the win.
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Tuesday, November 15 when the Blue Jays host Elizabethtown in non-conference action at Goldfarb Gymnasium.
