BALTIMORE, MD - Visiting Elizabethtown won the final five bouts to erase a three-point deficit and claim a 31-9 victory over host Johns Hopkins in non-conference wrestling action at Goldfarb Gym Tuesday night. The visiting Blue Jays scored two pins and grabbed a forfeit among those five matches, while the home-standing Blue Jays grabbed three decisions early, but couldn't hold on for the victory.
Johns Hopkins led 9-6 after a Matt Fusaro sudden victory decision at 157, but a Quint Eno major decision at 165 ignited a 25-0 run for Elizabethtown to close the match. Included were first-period pins by Dylan Carmichael (184) and Cameron Aregood (197) that fueled the late run for Etown.
Johns Hopkins got off to a quick start with two victories by decision at 125 and 133. Freshman Paul Bewak scored an impressive 9-5 win over Etown's Will Bentley at 125 and sophomore Ray Yagloski added a wild 13-9 win over Jodan Stepanchick at 133 to stake JHU to the early six-point lead. It was an especially impressive win for Bewak as Bentley opened the season ranked ninth at 125 by the NWCA.
Elizabethtown fought back to tie the match with a 7-0 win by Colin Sheridan at 141 and a 7-3 victory by Tye Boyer over Henry Stauber at 149. Fusaro then put Johns Hopkins back on top with a hard-fought 3-1 win over Max Barsky in overtime at 157. Barsky appeared to have the advantage on Fusaro in a side-to-side situation late in the first extra period, but Fusaro leveraged his way clear and quickly scored a takedown to take the 3-1 victory. Fusaro has now won five straight matches.
Eno's 18-5 win over Jody Gowen at 165 then ignited the match-ending run for the Blue Jays.
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, November 19 when the Blue Jays travel to Oneonta, New York to compete in the Red Dragon Open. The Blue Jays will be looking to defend their title as they won the team title at this event last season.
