BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team dominated in most statistical categories as the Blue Jays soared to a 71-35 win over Hood in the opening round of the 2011 Michael Durgala Memorial Tournament, hosted by Johns Hopkins, Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Jays (2-0) jumped out on top of Hood quickly in the opening half, leading 14-3 with 14:44 to go. The Blue Jays continued to build on their lead behind a 12-point run over the next seven minutes to extend the lead to 26-5. Sophomore Katie Brooks netted a jumper in the paint off an assist from senior Chantel Mattiola to give the Blue Jays a 25-point cushion at 34-9 with just less than six minutes to play in the opening half.
Freshman Magdalena Fruehan kicked off a six-point run with a free throw at 2:36 to close out the half and give the Blue Jays a 41-11 lead going into the locker room.
The Blue Jays came out shooting in the second half and would lead by as many as 38 points behind a jumper from junior Sarah Higbee to put Hopkins up, 56-18 with just over eight minutes to play. The Blazers continued to battle, however, and the two teams seemed to battle basket-for-basket over the last four minutes of the contest.
Dyanna Prater sunk the first of two free throws with 31 seconds left to play for Hood's last score of the contest before freshman Jessica Brown finished out the game with two free throws of her own with 18 seconds left on the clock.
The Blue Jays held a 46-8 advantage in bench points and were able to capitalize on turnovers, holding a 17-7 advantage in points off turnovers as well. The Blue Jays shot 43.1 percent (28-for-65) from the floor compared to Hood's 26.1 percent (12-for-46).
Mattiola led the Blue Jays with 13 points and four boards while junior Alex Vassila pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. The Blue Jays spread their offense around on the afternoon with 13 of the 14 Jays to see the floor scored at least two points. Senior Stephanie Fong had seven assists on the day.
Johns Hopkins returns to action when the Blue Jays face Bridgewater (VA) in the championship game of the Durgala Memorial Tournament, Sunday afternoon. Tip off is set for 3 pm. The Eagles advanced to the championship game after they defeated Averett in a hard-fought 54-51 win in the second round game. Hood will face Averertt in the consolation game at 1 pm Sunday.
