ANNAPOLIS, MD - The Johns Hopkins water polo team wrapped up the regular season on Saturday with a pair of matches at Navy. JHU fell to host and 16th-ranked Navy, 16-7, and then rebounded to beat Salem International, 9-2. The Blue Jays finish the regular season at 14-12 overall and are the fifth seed in this weekend's CWPA Southern Championship.
Hopkins got out to a good start against Navy and led the Mids 5-3 at the half. Navy came storming back in the third quarter, outscoring JHU 7-1 in the stanza to take a 10-6 lead. The Mids continued their offensive spurt with a 6-2 outing in the fourth quarter to take the win. Freshman Johnny Beal led the Blue Jays with his second hat trick of the season. Junior Kielan Crow chipped in a pair of goals, while classmate Alex Whittam handed out three assists. Freshmen Danny Ovelar and Scott Weigel shared time in the goal. Ovelar made 10 saves and had four steals, while Weigel had five stops.
In the nightcap, Hopkins pushed out to a 5-0 lead after the first quarter and didn't look back in the win over Salem International. Senior Mark Strickland paced the Blue Jays with his fourth hat trick of the season, while sophomore Chase Hamilton scored two goals, handed out an assist and had four steals. Freshman Jacob Dorn got the start in goal for Hopkins and made nine saves with one steal to earn the win over the Tigers.
Hopkins is the fifth seed in the CWPA Southern Championship November 4-6 hosted by Princeton University. Hopkins will face fourth-seeded George Washington on Friday at 7:00 pm. JHU will then take on ninth-seeded Gannon at 9:00 am on Saturday. For more on the championship, please click here.
