The Blue Jays defeated Hood 71-35 Saturday to earn their spot in the championship game Sunday afternoon. Bridgewater powered its way past Averett in its opening round game, 54-51, for a spot in the final game.
The Blue Jays (3-0) over came a 27.6 shooting percentage from the floor (8-for-29) in the first half to come from behind in the second half. Senior Stephanie Fong took a pass from junior Alex Vassila and converted a layup at 18:22 to give the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead, their only one of the first half. After tying the game four times over the next five minutes, the Eagles used eight un-answered points to take a 16-8 lead with 9:02 to go in the half.
The Blue Jays would use a six-point two-minute run with 5:35 to go before the break to pull within two points, 16-14, but could not overtake the Eagles. Vassila pulled down an offense rebound and layed the ball in the basket at 1:49 to get Hopkins to within one of Bridgewater, 17-16, but that would be as close as the Blue Jays would come in the first half. The Eagles scored four-straight to close out the half, 21-16.
The Blue Jays shot 14-for-31 from the floor compared to the Eagles, who shot 8-for-23, in the second half to come from behind and take the game 47-42. With 3:01 to go in regulation, Vassila converted another layup to give the Blue Jays a 45-35 lead, their biggest of the game and essentially put the game out of reach of the Eagles.
The Eagles' freshman Lindsay Torbeck scored the game's last basket with 23 seconds left on the clock, but the Blue Jays held the ball for the final possession of the game.
Hopkins outscored the Eagles 31-16 in the second half and held a 24-14 point advantage off turnovers for the game.
Mattiola finished out the tournament with 22 points, six rebounds and six steals to earn MVP honors, while Fong was named to the All-Tournament team with 13 assists and two steals.
The Blue Jays return to action when they host Haverford at Goldfarb Gym on Tuesday, November 22 to open Centennial Conference action for both teams. Tip off is set for 6 pm.
