BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's team suffered a rare loss to Centennial Conference foe, Haverford as the Blue Jays fell to the Fords, 54-42, at Goldfarb Gym Tuesday evening. The Blue Jays have only lost to the Fords twice in their 25-game all-time series.
The Blue Jays (3-1, 0-1) controlled the game early, building an 8-2 lead over the first five minutes. The Fords retaliated and used a four-minute 11-2 run to take the lead from Johns Hopkins and never looked back. The Blue Jays would chip away at the lead in the waning minutes of the first half behind a jumper from senior Chantel Mattiola to pull the Blue Jays to within four at 18-14, but could not find their rhythm and trailed by seven, 26-19, at the half.
The Fords (4-0, 1-0) opened the second half with a 13-6 run over the first five minutes to take a 40-25 lead. After Fords' Elizabeth Lynch hit a three-pointer, the Blue Jays scored 10 unanswered points with 7:37 to go in the half behind six points from sophomore Fatu Conteh and four from freshman Maggie Fruehan to pull within eight of the Fords, though the Blue Jays were not able to take the lead back.
With 41 seconds to go in the game, Mattiola hit a three to cut the Ford lead to 54-42, where the score would hold for a Haverford victory.
The Blue Jays bench outscored the Haverford bench 19-12 while the Blue Jays won the rebound battle as well, 47-36. Mattiola led Hopkins with 13 points, shooting 6-10 from the floor and one three. Conteh chipped in 11 points while junior Alex Vassila pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
After a quick Thanksgiving holiday break, the Blue Jays return to the court when they travel to Chestertown, MD to face Centennial Conference opponent, Washington College. The game time is set for 7 pm.
