CHESTERTOWN, MD - Junior KaraLea Follmer and sophomore Alyssa Flemingeach scored a career-high in points as they led the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team to a 67-57 win over Centennial Conference opponent, Washington College, Tuesday afternoon.
All of Fleming's career-high 11 points came in the first half as she was a perfect 3-3 from beyond the arc and a combined 4-6 from the floor. Follmer and senior Stephanie Fongled the team with 12 points each while Fong was a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line.
The lead changed hands three times until the Blue Jays (4-1, 1-1) took control for the remainder of the game with 8:09 to go in the first half. Follmer converted a layup coming out of a timeout to put Hopkins up, 20-18. Shorewoman senior Erin Fitzgerald hit the back end of two free throws to cut the Blue Jay lead to one, 20-19, but that would be as close as Washington could get to Hopkins.
With 1:19 to go in the first, senior Chantel Mattiolahit a three to put the Blue Jays up five. Freshman Maggie Fruehan hit a jumper off a pass from Fong with just two seconds to go to give the Blue Jays a 32-25 lead going into half time.
The Blue Jays used a 12-5 run over the first six minutes of the second half, capped by a layup from sophomore Fatu Conteh, to blow open the game and take their biggest lead of the game at that time at 44-29.
With 6:41 to go in regulation, the Blue Jays took a 20-point lead with the score 57-37 before Washington College charged back and chipped away at the Blue Jay lead. The Shorewomen scored 10 unanswered points over 2:49 to pull within nine. The Blue Jays would hold strong however, and not allow the Shorewomen to pull any closer than seven points and outscored Washington 6-3 over the final 60 seconds to hold on to a 10-point win.
Johns Hopkins returns to the court when the Blue Jays host CC foe, Gettysburg, Thursday, December 1 at Goldfarb Gym. Tipoff is set for 7 pm.
