BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team shot a season-best 30-53 (56.6 percent) from the floor as the Blue Jays defeated Centennial Conference opponent, Dickinson, 76-51 Saturday afternoon.
Johns Hopkins (6-1, 3-1) and Dickinson battled to an 11-11 tie over the first 7:13 before senior Chantel Mattiola hit her first three of the game to give the Blue Jays a 13-11 lead.
The Blue Jays used a 20-9 run over the next 10 minutes of play to take their largest lead of the game, 31-20, capped by another three pointer from Mattiola. The Red Devils (1-7, 1-3) outscored the Blue Jays 4-2 over the final two minutes, but the Blue Jays kept the Red Devils in check and took a 33-24 lead into half time.
Johns Hopkins came out shooting in the second half and used a 15-6 run over the first eight minutes to build it's biggest of the game to that point The Blue Jays did not back down and built a 20-point lead over the next three minutes to lead, 55-35 with 8:43 left on the clock. Mattiola hit her third three of the game with 3:11 left to play to give the Blue Jays a 24 point lead at 68-44.
Hopkins went on a 8-5 point run over the final 2:47 to seal the victory for the Blue Jays highlighted by four free throws from freshman Stacy Fairey.
Mattiola led the Blue Jays with 16 points and four assists while junior Alex Vassila was one rebound shy of a double-double with 13 points and nine boards. Mattiola has scored 16 points in two-straight contests.
The Blue Jay bench chipped in 28 points while hold the Red Devils to a 30.4 (14-46) shooting percentage.
The Blue Jays return to the court when they host McDaniel in a CC battle on Monday, December 5 for the Blue Jays final game of 2011. The tipoff is set for 7 pm.
