BALTIMORE, MD - Senior Chantel Mattiola continued her hot-shooting as she scored a season-high 20 points as she led the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team to a 58-51 win over the McDaniel Green Terror Monday night inside Goldfarb Gym.

The Blue Jays (7-1, 4-1 CC) and Green Terror (5-3, 3-2 CC) were knotted at 29 entering the locker room at half time after freshman Haley Bush hit both ends of a one-and-one trip to the free throw line to tie the game for the second time in the first half.

Over the first 14:56 of the second half, neither team took more than a three-point lead and saw the score tied three times before the Blue Jays finally took a four-point lead off a converted layup and bonus from Bush to give Hopkins a 49-44 lead.

With 1:57 left on the clock, junior Alex Vassila took a pass from senior Stephanie Fong and laid it in to give Hopkins its biggest lead of the second half at 54-47. With one minute left to play in regulation, McDaniel's Rachael Rybak hit a jump shot to cut the Hopkins' lead to five, 54-49, but gave possession back to the Blue Jays.

12 seconds into the Blue Jays possession, Mattiola was fouled to send her to the charity stripe. Coming into tonight's contest, the senior was a perfect 13-13 from the line. Mattiola hit the first to make it a two-possession lead for the Blue Jays. McDaniel's Steph Perez converted a layup with 23 seconds left but Mattiola hit three of her final four free throws of the game in the last 18 seconds to seal a seven-point victory for Hopkins with the score 58-51.

Mattiola hit a season-high four three-pointers and pulled down six rebounds. Vassila led the Blue Jays with 10 rebounds while chipping in five points. Fong handed out a team-high seven assists. Freshman Maggie Fruehan led the bench with 11 points and four boards while Bush add nine points and a season-high seven boards for the Blue Jays. The Blue Jay bench outscored its McDaniel counterpart, 26-5, and Hopkins won the rebounding battle 45-34.

The Blue Jays will take the rest of the month of December off before returning to the court on January 3 when the team opens its trip to California as it takes on Occidental. The game against the Tigers is set for 2 pm PST.
