Vitale Eclipses 200 Wins at Stevens Invitational

Feb. 16, 2011

HOBOKEN, NJ - Senior co-captain Mary Vitale eclipsed the 200-win mark for her career as the Johns Hopkins women's fencing team went 4-2 at Stevens Tech on Sunday. Hopkins earned wins over host Stevens, Queens College (NY), Tufts and Fairleigh-Dickinson. Hopkins dropped decisions to ninth-ranked Temple and Brandeis.

Hopkins opened the day with 18-9 win over host Stevens as the Blue Jays swept all three weapons. Freshman Katherine Simeon led the Blue Jays in the Sabre as she went 3-0, while freshman Kathleen Rand picked up a pair of wins as Hopkins won 6-3. Hopkins then won a tight 5-4 decision in the Epee, led by junior Lauren Chinn, who won all three of her bouts, including the deciding one. The Foil was not so close as the Blue Jays topped the Ducks 7-2 behind three-win efforts from freshman Jackie Heath and junior Marion Trumbull.

Temple then beat Hopkins, 22-5, in the second round. Rand and Simeon each won a bout in a 7-2 loss in the Sabre to the Owls. In the Epee, it was Chinn again who led the way as she went 3-0 to earn all three of the Blue Jays wins in the weapon. The Owls then swept the Foil, 9-0, to take the overall win.

Hopkins got back in the win column in a big way, defeating Queens College by a 24-3 score. The Blue Jays opened with a 9-0 win in the Sabre as four different Blue Jays saw action. Rand and senior Mary Vitale led the way as each went 3-0, while Simeon won both her bouts and junior Jenny Lenz won the final bout. The Epee saw Hopkins pick up an 8-1 win behind three-win outings from freshman Liz Caris and sophomore Komal Kumar. Heath paced the Blue Jays in the Foil, winning all three of her bouts, while Trumbull went 2-0 as Hopkins won 7-2.

Brandeis edged out Hopkins, 14-13, in round 4 in a tightly contested match. Simeon picked up a pair of wins in the Sabre but it wasn't enough as the Judges took the weapon, 6-3. Hopkins answered with 5-4 wins in both the Epee and Foil. In the Epee, Chinn went 3-0 and won the deciding bout, while Caris went 2-1 for the Blue Jays. And in the Foil, it was Heath leading the way with three wins in three bouts, while Trumbull picked up two wins.

Hopkins rebounded with a 16-11 win over Tufts. Vitale went 2-1 in the Sabre, but the Jumbos won the weapon by a 5-4 score. The Blue Jays then won the Epee, 5-4, behind Kumar and Caris, who each went 2-1, while Chinn subbed in for the final and deciding bout and picked up the win. The Foil was not as close as Hopkins won 7-2 behind Trumbull and junior Colleen Stone who went a combined 6-0.

Hopkins ended the day with a 23-4 win over FDU. Vitale and Simeon went a combined 6-0 to lead Hopkins to an 8-1 win in the Sabre. Vitale's second win in the bout was the 200th win of her career. In the Epee, Chinn concluded the day unbeaten, picking up three wins to go along with a pair from junior Minji Kim as Hopkins won 6-3. The Blue Jays then swept the Foil, 9-0, to close out the day. Heath and sophomore Diane Duros each went 3-0, while Trumbull earned a pair of wins and Stone won the final bout.

Hopkins returns to action at the 2011 Eastern Women's Fencing Conference Dual Meet Championship on Sunday, February 20, 2011, at Stevens Institute of Technology, in Hoboken, NJ.
