BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team took down visiting Swarthmore, 62-50, in Centennial Conference action on Saturday afternoon in Goldfarb Gym. The Blue Jays have now officially clinched a berth in the conference playoffs and improve to 17-4 (14-3 CC) with the win, while the Garnet fall to 12-8 (8-8 CC) and find themselves on the outside looking in at the conference playoff picture with just four games remaining.
Hopkins has now won four straight contests against Swarthmore, including a 48-37 road victory on January 13.
The Blue Jays trailed early by scores of 2-0 and 4-2, but junior Chantel Mattiola then took charge in the early going to propel JHU to a 17-4 lead with 14:12 left in the first half. Mattiola notched 13 of Hopkins first 17 points to give the Blue Jays the double-digit advantage.
Hopkins continued to extend its lead as the first half wore on, eventually leading by as many as 17 (30-13) after a jumper by freshman Fatu Conteh with 6:54 on the clock.
The Garnet whittled the JHU advantage to 40-32 after a layup from senior Kathryn Stockbower with 14:35 left in the second half, but junior Stephanie Fong and Mattiola each connected on three-pointers on Hopkins' next two possessions to make the Blue Jay lead 46-32 with 13:38 remaining.
Swarthmore was twice able to cut the Hopkins lead to 10, but the Blue Jays maintained a double-digit advantage the remainder of the way to secure the season sweep of the Garnet.
Mattiola led the Blue Jays in scoring with 18 points, while sophomore Alex Vassila tallied a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Fong played a well-rounded game for JHU with 13 points, five boards, three steals and two blocks and senior Lyndsay Burton totaled eight points and 10 boards in the win.
Stockbower recorded a double-double for Swarthmore with 18 points and 10 rebounds for her 80th career double-double, which breaks the NCAA Division III record previously held by JHU's Julie Anderson (1994-98). Anderson totaled 79 double-doubles in her time as a Blue Jay.
Junior Genny Pezzola notched 12 points for the Garnet, while sophomore Madeline Ross added 11 points in a losing effort.
Hopkins will conclude its three-game homestand on Wednesday, February 9 against McDaniel. Game time is set for 7 pm in Goldfarb Gym.
