BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins water polo team split its matches at the 2011 North-South Crossover at Navy Saturday. Hopkins lost to Brown, 10-6, in the morning but then rebounded to beat Iona, 15-11. The Blue Jays improve to 7-3 on the season as they prepare to open division play next week.

In the opening match, Brown jumped out to a 4-2 lead after one quarter and led 5-3 at the half. Each team netted a pair of goals in the third as Hopkins still trailed by two (7-5) heading into the final quarter, where Brown pulled away for the 10-6 win. Juniors Kielan Crow and Ross Schofield led the team with a pair of goals each, while classmate Alex Whittam had a goal and a pair of assists. Freshman goalie Danny Ovelar made 10 saves with two steals in the loss.

In the nightcap, Hopkins rallied in the fourth quarter with five unanswered goals to beat Iona for the third time this season. The Gaels led 6-4 at the half, before the Blue Jays put together a 5-3 outing in the third to make it a 9-9 game heading into the final stanza. Iona led by one in the fourth but then Hopkins scored five straight to win 15-11. Whittam led the way with five goals, while senior Mark Strickland notched a hat trick and Schofield and freshman Johnny Beal each had a pair of goals. Ovelar made nine saves to earn the win.

Hopkins opens CWPA Southern Division play this weekend as Princeton visits Baltimore on September 23. The match is slated to start at 8:00 pm. Hopkins will then host Bucknell on Saturday at noon before traveling to George Washington for an 8:00 pm match.
