BALTIMORE, MD - The 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's soccer team shutout host Goucher, 7-0, to win the Goucher Soccer Classic Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays pick up their first win of the season to move to 1-0-1, while the Gophers fall to 1-2-0. Freshman Rob Heuler was named the tournament MVP, while seniors Corey Adams and Sean Coleman and sophomore Birin Padam joined him on the all-tournament team.
Hopkins got on the board early as Coleman put home an unassisted shot less than five minutes in to the contest. The Blue Jays lead grew to two less than a minute later when Padam converted a pass from senior Sean Duggan. Senior Tony Gass added an unassisted goal in the 27th minute, followed by a goal from sophomore Sam Glassman in the 36th minute, as Hopkins took a 4-0 lead into the intermission.
Freshman Simon Rojas got his first career goal in the 69th minute on an unassisted tally. Classmate Andrew Clayton followed that with his first career goal less than two minutes later on helpers from Adams and freshman Matt Carey. Sophomore Alvin Onyewuenyi closed out the scoring in the 88th minute off a feed from freshman Kyle Fischer.
Sophomore John Belanger got the start in goal and was not forced to make a save in 45 minutes of action. Freshman Nick Cerrone replaced him at halftime and made two saves in his collegiate debut. Hopkins outshot Goucher 36-5 and had 11 corners to none the hosts. David Spivey took the loss for the Gophers despite making eight saves.
Hopkins returns to action on Friday, September 9 versus TCNJ at the Stockton Seashore Classic. The game is slated to start at 7:30 pm.
