HAMPTON, VA - The Johns Hopkins wrestling team dropped a pair of matches on Friday on the first day of the prestigious Virginia Duals. The Blue Jays opened with a 35-11 loss to Central Florida before falling to St. Andrews, 30-22, in the consolation semifinals.
After opening with the loss to Central Florida and falling behind 14-0 to St. Andrews, the Blue Jays fought back to take a 22-20 lead. A major decision by Hopkins' Evan Rodbell at 149 was answered by a pin at 157 by Kody Getkin of St. Andrews, but Jody Gowen, Travis Laska and Evan Johnson all posted first-period pins to give the Blue Jays an improbable 22-20 lead with two matches remaining.
Having to forfeit at 285, the Blue Jays needed a win by major decision or better from senior Ben Finelli at 197 to grab the team victory. Wrestling a weight class up, Finelli fell to Greg Pattis by a score of 8-0 and St. Andrews added the forfeit victory at 285 to account for the 30-22 final score.
Freshman Paul Bewak got the Blue Jays off to a quick start against Central Florida as he opened the match with a 16-0 victory over Chris Fox, but the Knights answered with five straight wins, including pins at 133 and 165, to open a 23-5 lead. Back-to-back wins by Johnson at 174 and Finelli at 184 sliced the deficit to 23-11, but the Blue Jays forfeited the final two matches to account for the 35-11 final score.
