Blue Jays Fall to Haverford

HAVERFORD, PA - The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker in Haverford, PA to the Fords in Centennial Conference action, Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays fell 41-37 after a 7-2 run by the Fords in the final two minutes of the game.

The Blue Jays move to 12-2 on the season and 7-2 in the conference while the Fords improve to 11-3 overall and 7-3 in the Centennial.

The Blue Jays got off to a 5-1 lead in the first two minutes of the first half after senior Chantel Mattiola hit a three to open the game, just 16 seconds into the contest and junior Alex Vassila converted a layup off a pass from senior Stephanie Fong. The Fords answered with a 5-0 run over the next four minutes and took a 6-5 lead, their first of the half. Neither team could establish an offensive run and kept the score close. The Blue Jays closed out the first with a 15-14 lead, despite two good free throws from Haverford's Rachel Baskin.

The Fords scored the first four points of the second half over the first 1:28 of play but the Blue Jays went on a 7-2 run over the next 2:34 to take the lead back at 22-20. The score would remain locked at 22-20 over the next 3:15 until freshman Maggie Fruehan grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back up to give the Blue Jays a 24-20 lead.

The Blue Jays took their biggest lead of the game at eight points, 35-27, behind 11-7 run over the next nine minutes but the Fords countered with 12 unanswered points to take a 39-35 lead with just 34 seconds left on the clock. Junior Sarah Higbee hit a jumper with 14 seconds left, but the Fords' Elizabeth Lynch hit both of her free throws with just 2 seconds left to finalize a 41-37 win for the Fords.

Hopkins shot a season-low 27.1 percent (13-for-48) from the floor and held the Fords to a season-low 20.8 percent shooting (10-for-48). Haverford capitalized on the Blue Jays 29 turnovers, outscoring the Blue Jays 22-15 on points from turnovers. The Blue Jays won the rebounding battle, 46 to 30.

Hopkins returns to the court when the Blue Jays travel to Allentown, PA to face Muhlenberg on Monday, January 16 in a crucial CC battle. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
