Blue Jays Fly High Over Owls

BRYN MAWR, PA - The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team used a 18-2 run over the first six minutes of the first half to pull away from Bryn Mawr and defeat the Owls 94-28 in Centennial Conference action, Thursday evening.

Senior Chantel Mattiola converted back-to-back three-point plays, one from beyond the arc and a traditional three-point play, before junior Alex Vassila hit a jumper after grabbing an offensive rebound with 13:59 to go in the first to cap the Blue Jays' (14-2, 9-2 CC) 18-2 run to open the game. Hopkins scored 17 unanswered points in the final 5:35 of the half to pull away from the Owls (0-14, 0-11 CC) and lead 44-9 going into the locker room.

The Blue Jays went on a 16-6 run over the first 8:39 of the second half to take a 60-15 lead. The Owls hung tough and Aislinn Toohey drilled a three with exactly 7:00 left on the clock to cut the Blue Jay lead to 74-21. JHU then used a 20-7 run over the final seven minutes to put the game away and hand the Blue Jays their second-straight win.

Johns Hopkins saw a balanced scoring effort with 13 players recording points and four players in the double figures. Freshman Jessica Brown led the Blue Jays with 19 points, including three triples. Mattiola chipped in 13 points while Vassila added 11 points, posted four blocks and pulled down a team-leading eight rebounds. Freshman Maggie Fruehan rounded out the double-digit scorers for Hopkins with 10 points and pulled down six boards. The Blue Jay bench added a season-high 56 points.

13 players recorded at least one rebound for the Blue Jays in tonight's game. JHU out-rebounded the Owls 52-35. Hopkins posted a season-high 11 blocks, just one block shy of the school's single game record. Eight of the 11 blocks came in the first half for the Blue Jays.

The Blue Jays return to action on Saturday, January 21 when Hopkins welcomes Dickinson to Goldfarb Gym for Centennial Conference action with tipoff set for 1 pm.
