BALTIMORE, MD - Twelfth-ranked Swarthmore scored three goals in the final 16 minutes to come from behind in a 3-1 win over host Johns Hopkins on Saturday night in Centennial Conference men's soccer action at Homewood Field. The Blue Jays fall to 5-7-2 overall and 3-3-1 in the conference, while the Garnet improve to 11-1-2 and 6-0-1 in the CC.
After a scoreless first half, senior Brandon Sumpio put the Blue Jays on top in the 46th minute. Garnet goalie Peter Maxted came out to play a ball near the top of the box and Sumpio was able to chip it over him and then finish from in tight for his second of the season. Hopkins was able to maintain the lead until the 74th minute when David Geschwind headed in a long throw from the left flank by Jake Weiner.
The Garnet then took the lead as the visitors cashed in on a corner kick. Geoffrey Stewart played the ball into the box from the left corner flag where it was headed out by a Hopkins' defender. The ball went right to John Pontillo who volleyed it into the net to give Swarthmore a 2-1 lead in the 88th minute. Michael Stewart put the punctuation on the scoring in the 90th minute with his team-leading 10th of the season. Alec McLean played a long ball over the Blue Jay defense and Stewart chipped it over an on-charging Nick Cerrone to make it 3-1.
Cerrone finished with five saves for the Blue Jays in the loss, while Maxted made six stops to earn the win. Hopkins had a 14-13 edge in shots while corners were even at three apiece. It was a physical affair with a total of 33 fouls called and one yellow card issued.
Hopkins returns to action on Monday, October 22 as JHU travels to Rutgers-Camden in a game rescheduled from earlier this season. Game time for the non-conference tilt is slated for 7:00 pm.
