BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's swim team won 13 of 14 events en route to a 203-59 win over visiting Franklin & Marshall Saturday at the Newton White Athletic Center. The Blue Jays improve to 2-0 on the season, while the Diplomats drop their season opener.
Hopkins opened the meet by taking the top two spots in the 200 Medley Relay. The team of juniors Taylor Kitayama, Cristina Cusumano, Kylie Ternes and sophomore Ana Bogdanovski won the event with a time of 1:50.43. Following in second place was the team of sophomores Melinda Yau, Maggie Storm, Kylie Holden and freshman Hannah Bunkin in 1:52.85. The Blue Jays followed that with second and third place finishes in the 1000 Free, in the Diplomats only win of the meet. Junior Katie Rownd clocked in at 11:24.76 to take second place, while senior Cathy Howard took third in 11:26.37.
Junior Alex Ladd got Hopkins back in the win column with a time of 1:57.17 to win the 200 Free by 2.4 seconds. Senior Eleanor Gardner placed third with a time of 1:59.66. Yau and sophomore Hannah Benn then finished one-two in the 50 Back, finishing in 28.74 and 28.93, respectively. Storm and Cusumano turned the same trick in the 50 Breast, clocking in at 32.00 and 32.48, respectively. Not to be out done, Holden and Ladd also finished one-two in the 100 Fly. Holden touched first with a time of 1:00.68, just besting Ladd, who finished in 1:00.79.
In the 50 Free, it was Blue Jays going one, two, three to pick up 16 points. Freshman Megan Auzenburgs took the win as she finished in 24.42, finishing just four hundredths of a second off the pool record. Ternes finished in second with a time of 25.21 and Bunkin placed third in 25.57. Bogdanovski followed with a win in the 100 Free with a time of 52.79, followed by Gardner in second in 54.23.
Hopkins then took the top three spots in the 100 Back and 100 Breast to extend its lead on Franklin & Marshall. Kityama led the contingent in the Back, touching in 58.02 for the win. Freshman Sean McGrath claimed second with a time of 1:00.74 and Yau placed third in 1:02.63. In the 100 Breast, it was sophomore Sammi Fox claiming the win in 1:08.38. Storm finished in 1:09.69 for second place, while Cusumano claimed third in 1:10.89. Junior Sarah Rinsma won a close battle in the 500 Free, touching in 5:13.76 to best the Dips' Katie Grant by six hundredths of a second. Freshman Ellen Marcus placed third as she finished in 5:20.04.
The Blue Jays once again claimed the top two spots, this time in the 50 Fly and 400 IM. Holden paced the field in the Fly, touching in 26.71 to take first. Freshman Jeanne Banky placed second in 27.83. In the IM, it was Fox leading the way with a time of 4:41.81 to win by more than nine seconds. Freshman Julia Ju followed in second place as she finished in 4:50.88. Hopkins closed out the meet by finishing one, two, three in the 400 Free Relay. Rinsma, Ladd, McGrath and Yau combined to win the event with a time of 3:37.60. Coming in second in 3:38.52 were Auzenburgs, Kitayama, Ternes and senior Kristen Ferriero. And in third place came Bogdanovski, Bunkin, Gardner and sophomore Jillian Liwacz with a time of 3:40.72.
Hopkins returns to action with the annual Loyola Thomas Murphy Invitational, November 2-3, at the Mangione Pool. The Invitational is set to begin at 5:00 pm on Friday, November 2.
