ANNAPOLIS, MD - Host Navy topped Johns Hopkins, 12-5, on Saturday in both teams' regular season finale to earn the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division Regular Season title. The Blue Jays finish the regular season at 22-8 overall and are the three seed for this weekend's CWPA Southern Division Championship. The Mids improve to 21-2, with just one of their two losses coming to the Blue Jays, and are the top seed in the tournament.
Navy jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first quarter and led 8-1 at the half. The Blue Jays rallied in the second half, matching the Mids goal for goal in the final 16 minutes but the seven-goal half-time deficit was too much to overcome.
Senior Ross Schofield led Hopkins with three goals and two assists, giving him 94 goals for the season - the second most in school history. Senior Alex Whittam and junior Stephen Kingery each scored for Hopkins as well, while Whittam also grabbed three steals and had a block. Sophomore Danny Ovelar made five saves in two and a half quarters of action, while freshman Erik Henrikson stopped four shots in one and a half quarters.
Hopkins is the three seed at the CWPA Southern Championship for the second time in the last three years and third in the last six. The Blue Jays finished in a program-best second place at the 2007 championship, when they were seeded third. Hopkins will face sixth-seeded Mercyhurst in the opening round on Friday, November 2 at 9:30 am. Bucknell, seeded fourth, is serving as this year's tournament host.
