GETTYSBURG, PA - The Gettysburg women's basketball team mounted a 10-0 run to begin the second half and never looked back Thursday evening as it defeated Johns Hopkins, 54-48, in Bream Gym.
Sophomore guard Stacy Fairey led a fierce rally by the Blue Jays to cut the deficit to two points with 3:27 remaining, but Gettysburg (2-3, 1-1 CC) made five-of-seven free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
As it has all season, Hopkins (2-5, 0-3 CC) played excellent defense in the first half, taking a 23-20 advantage into the halftime break. Six different Blue Jays scored in the first half, led by Beatriz Williams' six points.
Senior Alex Vassila gave Hopkins a four-point lead one minute into the second half, but back-to-back 3-pointers by Gettysburg's Caroline Murphy proved to spark the Bullet offense. The Bullets rattled off 10 consecutive points in a span of four minutes to take a 31-25 lead with 15:41 to play.
Gettysburg led by as much as 10 points with 8:23 remaining, when Fairey knocked down a 3-pointer to cut the Blue Jay deficit to 42-35. Fairey then added five more points three minutes later to bring Hopkins to within two points, 47-45. That was the closest Hopkins would get to the lead, however, as it went 0-for-6 from the field in the final four minutes.
Fairey and Vassila each had a team-high 12 points, while three separate Blue Jays totaled six points. The Bullets were led by Jessica Porter, who notched 12 points.
Hopkins looks to earn its first conference win of the season Saturday as it takes on Ursinus in Goldfarb Gym at 1:00 pm.
