BALTIMORE, MD - Senior Alex Vassila had a career day Saturday afternoon, notching a career-high 22 points and 20 rebounds to lead the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team past Ursinus, 70-61, in overtime.
Vassila collected three blocks in the victory, surpassing Katie Kimball to become the Hopkins all-time blocks leader (150). She is also the first Blue Jay to record 20 points and 20 rebounds since Julie Anderson's 31 point, 21 rebound effort on March 13, 1998.
The victory did not come easy for Hopkins (3-5, 1-3 CC), however, as it had to fight off a late rally by Ursinus (4-2, 2-1 CC) which forced overtime. The Blue Jays subsequently pulled away in the overtime period, outscoring the Bears, 13-4, to secure the win.
The Bears came out of the gates on fire, and opened a 14-2 lead five minutes into the game. Undeterred, the Blue Jays shook off their early nerves and slowly chipped away at the Ursinus lead. Hopkins managed to cut its deficit to four at the halftime break, due in large part to eight points from freshman Beatriz Williams.
It was Hopkins who set the tone in the second half, as Vassila scored seven points to lead a 10-0 run to open the frame. The Blue Jays controlled the game with a comfortable lead through most of the half, but Amber Yacenda brought the Bears within two points with less than a minute to play.
With the score 56-54 and 30 seconds remaining, sophomore Stacy Fairey had an opportunity to seal the game at the free throw line, but left the door open after missing her second shot. The Bears stormed down the court and Tori Steinberg drilled a 3-pointer to square the game at 57 apiece. Fatu Conteh game-winning bid then clanked off the rim as the buzzer sounded.
Vassila and Fairey took over for the Blue Jays in the overtime period, as Vassila collected seven rebounds and Fairey scored seven points.
Williams notched 11 points and eight rebounds for Hopkins - both career-highs. Tori Steinberg had a team-high 13 points for the Bears, while Jessica Porada registered 14 rebounds.
Hopkins returns to action on Tuesday in Goldfarb Gym at 7:00 pm as it takes on Dickinson.
