BALTIMORE, MD - Despite holding Dickinson to a season-low 56 points, the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team faltered down the stretch and fell to the Red Devils, 56-51, Tuesday night in Goldfarb Gym.
Dickinson rallied from a 12-point second half deficit, using a 16-2 run over the course of 12 minutes to advance its conference record to 2-2 (6-2 overall). Hopkins fell to 3-6 overall, and 1-4 in conference action.
The Blue Jay offense was firing on all cylinders early in the contest, energized by freshman point guard Liz Tommasi. The rookie set the tone for the game, storming to the hole for an easy lay-up 15 seconds into the action.
Hopkins extended its lead to 13-6, before the Red Devils charged back to even the score at 13 apiece with 10 minutes to play in the first half.
The Blue Jays took a formidable 28-22 lead into halftime, however, as Tommasi and sophomore Stacy Fairey each tallied nine points at the break.
The second half proved to be determined by momentum, with the Blue Jays having the upper hand in the first portion of the frame. Hopkins collected five consecutive buckets from five different players to jump out to a 44-32 lead with 10:38 to play in the match.
The home side would only score six more points in the game, however, as Dickinson cranked up its defense and went on a 16-2 run to take the lead, 48-46, after a 3-pointer by Rachel Sisco with five minutes to play. The Red Devils then shot 4-for-6 from the field in the final four minutes to secure the victory.
Dickinson had three players notch double-figure point totals, while the Blue Jays' Tommasi registered career-highs in points (12), assists (5) and rebounds (6). Fairey had a game-high 15 points for Hopkins.
Hopkins returns to action on Thursday as it travels to McDaniel for a 7:00 pm tip-off.
