#23 Blue Jays Shoot Down Bullets

GETTYSBURG, PA -With 3:43 to go in the second half, senior Chantel Mattiola hit a three to put the #23-ranked Johns Hopkins women's basketball team up 11 over host Gettysburg and lead the Blue Jays to a 67-57 victory to extend their winning streak to six games and snap a seven-game streak for the Bullets.

Mattiola took a pass from sophomore Fatu Conteh and hit her only triple of the game to put the Blue Jays up 11, 55-44, with 3:43 to play. Almost a minute later, the Bullets' Caroline Murphy hit a jumper with 2:46 to go on the clock to cut the Blue Jay lead to nine. Senior Stephanie Fong hit both shots on a trip to the charity stripe before the Bullets converted back-to-back layups to pull within seven, 57-50, with just over two minutes on the clock. Hopkins outscored the Bullets 10-7 over the final two minutes with all of JHU's points coming from free throws to seal the victory.

The Bullets (11-9, 9-6 CC) took their largest lead of the game with 18:06 to play in the first half after scoring the game's first five points, 5-0. The Blue Jays (18-2, 13-2 CC) chipped away and eventually took their first lead of the game at 10-9 with 13:44 to play off a jumper from freshman Haley Bush. The lead would change hands five more times over the next 6:11 before the Bullets took the lead for good and led 27-26 going into the locker room.

The Blue Jays were outshooting the Bullets 44.8 percent (13-for-29) to 37.5 percent (9-for-24) going into the intermission, but the Bullets were 8-for-10 from the free throw line while the Blue Jays did not make a trip to the charity stripe in the first half.

The Blue Jays and the Bullets traded buckets to open the second half before Gettysburg built another five-point lead, 33-28 with 17:31 to play in the half. Hopkins then went on a 10-point run to take the lead back for good and build its own five-point lead at 38-33 with 14:05 on the clock. Neither team could pull away until the Blue Jays went on their nine-point run with 6:34 to go on the clock to put JHU up 11.

Fong led all scoring with 16 points, while going 8-for-10 from the charity stripe. Mattiola and junior Alex Vassila each hit double-digits for the Blue Jays, with Mattiola scoring 11 and Vassila chipping in 10. Vassila led rebounding with eight while adding two blocks, which moves her into second on the JHU career blocked shot list. Vassila has 111 blocks so far in her career in a Blue Jay uniform.

The Blue Jays shot 48.2 percent (27-56) from the floor while holding the Bullets to 33.9 percent (19-for-56). Hopkins also won the rebounding battle, 37-31.

Hopkins continues its road trip as the Blue Jays travel to Swarthmore, PA on Saturday, February 4 to face the Garnet, Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
