Vassila Leads JHU to Victory in Regular Season Finale

BALTIMORE, MD - The 25th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's basketball team wrapped up its regular season with a 74-26 rout of Bryn Mawr, Thursday evening inside Goldfarb Gym. The Blue Jays improved to 21-3 overall and 17-3 in the conference, while the Owls dropped to 0-24 overall and 0-19 in conference play.

The Owls tied the game at two apiece with 19:24 showing on the clock in the first half before the Blue Jays scored 15 unanswered points over the next 6:59 of play, capped by a three-pointer from freshman Jessica Brown to jump out to a 17-2 lead. Bryn Mawr's Aislinn Toohey hit a triple with 8:41 to go in the first half before JHU closed out the first stanza on a 14-3 spurt to take a 37-10 lead going into the intermission.

Senior Chantel Mattiola opened the second frame with a three-pointer before classmate Kat Fox hit jumper off a pass from fellow senior Stephanie Fong to give the Blue Jays a 42-10 lead. Bryn Mawr's Danielle Preziuso sunk her only triple of the game with 16:51 to play but Hopkins went on to score 12 unanswered points over the next 5:28 to push its lead to 41 at 54-13. Jackie Handy converted a layup for the Owls before Mattiola and Toohey traded triples and sophomore Katie Brooks and Quinn Conlan traded jumpers to cut the Hopkins' lead to 39, 59-20, with 9:14 to left in the second half.

Chantelle Kennedy hit a pair of free throws with 5:46 left but Johns Hopkins scored six-straight to extend its lead to 46 with just over two minutes to play. Ashton Dwyer sunk the last two buckets for the Owls with a pair of free throws with 2:00 showing, but those would be the final two points of the game for Bryn Mawr. Junior KaraLea Follmer closed out the game for the Blue Jays with two baskets in the final two minutes of play to hand Hopkins a 74-26 victory.

The Blue Jays shot 45.8 percent (33-for-72) from the field while holding the Owls to a 22.9% clip (8-for-35). Hopkins won the rebounding battle, 50-21.

Vassila led all scoring with 16 points and tied with freshman Ciara McCullagh with a game-high seven boards. Mattiola chipped in six points and handed out a game-high eight assists. McCullagh added eight points for the Blue Jays.

Johns Hopkins earned the regular season title earlier this week and will prepare to host the upcoming Centennial Conference championship tournament on February 24. The Blue Jays will play the winner of the play-in game on Wednesday, February 22. More information about the tournament will be made available early next week.
