Final Stats

TOWSON, MD -- The Johns Hopkins women's volleyball team defeated Stevenson in five sets to win the Greg Giovanazzi Memorial Tournament Sunday afternoon. Jasmine Warmington was named the tournament's most valuable player, while fellow freshman Carolyn Zin earned all-tournament team honors.

The victory over Stevenson capped off an excellent tournament for the Blue Jays, who also defeated Cabrini, Goucher and Hiram en route to capturing the title. Three of the four teams were NCAA qualifiers in 2011.

"[The tournament] was a great start to the season and a complete team effort this weekend," said Johns Hopkins head coach Matt Troy. "For a young team it's a positive sign to see them gelling so quickly."

The weekend marked a fantastic collegiate debut for Warmington, who collected 48 kills in four games. Zin led the team with 78 total assists and senior Amelia Thomas had 45 total digs.

Hopkins (4-0) dropped the first set to Stevenson, 21-25, but came storming back to take the next two sets, 25-15 and 25-21. The Mustangs forced a fifth set, but were thwarted by Hopkins, 15-12, in the final frame. Zin and Warmington saved their best performances for the finals, collecting 31 assists and 23 kills, respectively.

Hopkins came out shaky in its opening match of the season versus Cabrini, but prevailed to earn the victory, 3-1 (19-25, 25-23, 25-13, 25-17). Warmington collected 14 kills, while Thomas notched 20 digs to lead the team. Mariel Metalios led the Blue Jays with 17 assists.

The Blue Jays then handily defeated Goucher later Saturday afternoon, 3-0 (25-12, 25-6, 25-15). Freshmen led the way for Hopkins as Caitlin Callihan had nine kills, Stephanie Yokoyama had nine digs and Zin had 18 assists.

Hiram proved no match for Hopkins Sunday morning in the final round of group play, as the Blue Jays won 3-0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-22). Zin notched a team-high eight digs and 15 assists.

The undefeated Blue Jays next face a tough test at the Washington & Lee Tournament in Lexington, VA on September 7 and 8. Hopkins is scheduled to square off against North Carolina Wesleyan, Southern Virginia, Lynchburg and Washington & Lee.
