BALTIMORE, MD - Ellen Rogers notched 15 kills with a .609 hitting percentage and Amelia Thomas had 19 digs as the Johns Hopkins volleyball team defeated Gallaudet, 3-1, Thursday night at Goldfarb Gym. The Blue Jays advanced to a program-best 13-0 on the season.
After a shaky start, Hopkins took control of the match in the third set as sophomore Anne Cohen served for 10 consecutive points. The stretch gave the Blue Jays an insurmountable 17-3 lead, swinging all momentum in favor of the home side towards a 25-8 set victory.
Hopkins appeared well on its way to securing the first set before Gallaudet (10-4) mounted an 8-3 run to close out the set, 25-20. The Blue Jays recovered in the second set, however, and squeezed out a 25-22 win behind three kills by Rogers.
The Blue Jay's carried their momentum from Cohen's big third set into the fourth frame and used a 5-1 run in the middle of the set to secure a 25-20 victory.
Rogers and freshman Jasmine Warmington unleashed on the Bison in the final two sets, combining for 16 kills. The Blue Jays never trailed in the final three sets.
Sarah Tubert recorded a match-high 35 assists for the Bison, while Kate Fetzer had 17 digs and Ann Whited tallied 13 kills.
Hopkins returns to the court tomorrow, September 21, at Muhlenberg in Allentown, PA. The Blue Jays are then set to face Messiah and St. Mary's (MD) on Saturday in St. Mary's, MD.
