Chestertown, MD - Senior forward Alex Vassila recorded 12 points, 12 rebounds and a career-high seven blocks Thursday night to lead the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team past Washington College, 55-42, in the Cain Athletic Center. The win marked the Blue Jays second conference win in as many days.
Leading by five points with 13:38 to play, Hopkins (6-8, 4-5) broke the game open by mounting a 10-0 run over the course of three minutes to extend its advantage to 41-26. The run was set in motion through a pair of 3-pointers by Stacy Fairey and Jessica Brown.
Sitting comfortably with a double-digit advantage, the Blue Jays maintained their lead through strong play on the boards for the remainder of the game. Vassila tallied nine rebounds in the second frame, including four on the offensive glass.
The contest was slow to start, as the pair of sides traded possessions with little success on the offensive end. Leading 15-14 with 4:06 to play in the first half, the Blue Jays banked five points by way of the charity stripe to enter the break with a 24-20 lead.
Washington (7-7, 5-4) pressed the young Hopkins guards throughout the game, but the visitors responded by tallying eight fast break points. Fairey had 14 points and a career-high eight rebounds, while freshman guard Liz Tommasi had 12 points.
The Shorewomen were held to just 27.9% shooting from the field, and shot a meager 2-for-15 from beyond the arc.
Washington's Latisha Pledger notched 14 boards on the night, but was held to just one offensive board in the second half. Teammate Ashley Espinosa had a team-high 12 points.
Hopkins looks to earn its third consecutive victory on Saturday as it welcomes Haverford to Goldfarb Gym for a 1:00 pm bout.
