2013 National Duals - Final Results
SPRINGFIELD, IL - Matched with three of the top 13 teams in the nation, the Johns Hopkins wrestling team dropped three matches at the 2013 NWCA/ClIff Keen National Duals on Saturday. The Blue Jays held the lead early in all three matches before falling to top-ranked Wartburg (25-12), eighth-ranked Coe (35-6) and 13th-ranked Luther (24-13).
Against the top-ranked Knights, JHU jumped out to a stunning 12-4 lead after five matches before Wartburg won the final five bouts to take the 13-point win. In one of the featured matches of the day, Johns Hopkins' Paul Bewak, the top-ranked wrestler in the nation at 125, edged second-ranked Gilberto Camacho, 2-0. The loss snapped a 12-match winning streak for Camacho and the win was the first of three on the day for Bewak.
Hopkins fell behind 4-3 after 133, but senior Paul Marcello's 4-3 upset of fourth-ranked Thomas Mirocha ignited a three-bout run for the upstart Blue Jays that included wins by junior Henry Stauber at 149 and sophomore Christian Salera at 157 to give the Blue Jays the 12-4 lead. Junior Landon Williams, the top-ranked wrestler at 165, fueled the match-ending run for Wartburg with a technical fall at 165 and Ryan Fank, the fifth-ranked heavyweight in the nation, capped the win with a first-period pin.
Bewak and Stauber both scored decisions in the loss to Coe, but three pins in the final five matches were more than the Blue Jays could overcome in the first round of the consolations. Marcello and junior Ray Yagloski dropped tight decisions at 141 and 133, respectively in a match that was closer early than the final score indicates.
The Blue Jays jumped out to a 13-3 lead in the match against Luther as Bewak, Marcello, Stauber and Salera all picked up wins, but The Norse scored wins in the final five bouts to pull out the victory.
Bewak and Stauber both posted 3-0 records on the day, while Marcello and Salera were both 2-1. The hard-luck wrestler of the day was likely sophomore Evan Johnson, who drew matches against opponents ranked fifth, sixth and seventh in the nation and lost all three by decision.
