BALTIMORE, MD - Senior Alex Vassila matched a program record with eight blocks in addition to 15 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team to a resounding 86-29 win over visiting Bryn Mawr Thursday night.
Hopkins (8-8, 6-5 CC) captured its fourth consecutive win - all against conference opponents - as it took advantage of Bryn Mawr's 24 turnovers. The Blue Jays scored 38 points off of turnovers, in addition to 24 second chance points.
Bryn Mawr (1-14, 0-11 CC) snapped the Blue Jays streak of 87:13 without trailing by jumping on the board first on a layup by Jackie Handy. The lead was short-lived, however, as Hopkins mounted a 41-1 run over the course of the next 15 minutes.
Included in the run were two straight steals and fastbreak lay-ups by freshman Liz Tommasi, who finished with 16 points in the game. Vassila dominated inside in the first frame, matching her previous career-high of seven blocks in just 10 minutes of action. The Blue Jays took a 48-8 lead in the half.
The Owls found a bit more success in the second half, as the Centennial Conference's second leading scorer, Nicolette Parmese, put home 13 points on 6-11 shooting. The deficit was far too much to overcome for Bryn Mawr, however, as Hopkins cruised to an 86-29 victory.
Steph Binder finished with a career-high nine points on 3-5 shooting from 3-point land, while Ciara McCullagh had 13 points and 8 rebounds for Hopkins. Jessica Brown and Scarlett McCracken combined for 16 points in the effort.
Hopkins looks to make it five wins in-a-row as it travels to Carlisle, PA Saturday for a meeting with Dickinson. The Blue Jays fell to the Red Devils by five points earlier in the season on December 4.
