CARLISLE, PA - Senior Alex Vassila tallied 14 points and 15 rebounds and Stacy Fairey had 15 points, as the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team cruised by Dickinson, 70-46, in the Cain Center Saturday afternoon. The result marked the Blue Jays fifth consecutive victory - all in Centennial Conference play.
Hopkins (9-8, 7-5 CC) broke the game wide open with eight minutes to play when it scored three straight baskets to take a 19-point lead, 56-37. The run started with a beautiful backdoor pass from Vassila to freshman Liz Tomassi for an easy lay-up. Tommasi then scored again after a steal and a coast-to-coast basket.
The run took the wind out of the sails of Dickinson (10-6, 6-6 CC), as the Blue Jays extended their lead to 25 points, 62-47, on a bucket by Ciara McCullagh with 1:26 to play.
Hopkins led the entire of game, and progressively extended its lead throughout the first half. Dickinson shot a meager 22% from the field in the frame, but managed to make up for its offensive ineptitude by getting to the free throw line 18 times. Fairey and Vassila combined for 20 points to give the Blue Jays a sizable 39-25 lead at halftime.
Tommasi finished the game with 14 points, while Fatu Conteh and Fairey combined for nine steals. The Red Devils were led by 10 points and eight rebounds from Bridget Borgese and eight point and eight rebounds from Dana Walsh.
Once just 2-5 in Centennial Conference play, the Blue Jays now sit fifth in the conference standings. They have trailed just seven minutes in their last 200 minutes of action over the course of the five-game win streak.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday against Franklin & Marshall in Goldfarb Gym at 7:00 pm.
