BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team's five-game winning streak came to a sputtering halt Wednesday night as it fell to Franklin & Marshall, 51-47, in Goldfarb Gym. The Blue Jays dropped to 10-8 (7-6 CC), while the Diplomats moved to 7-11 (4-9 CC).
F&M's Alexa Barbush stole the show, scoring 17 of the Diplomats final 18 points down the stretch to single-handedly defeat the Jays. In total, Barbush finished the game with 30 points, including 18 from the free throw line.
Hopkins freshman Katie Clark kept her side in contention during the final three minutes, knocking down three consecutive 3-pointers to give the Blue Jays a 47-44 lead with 2:04 to play. After cutting the Hopkins lead to 47-46, Barbush missed a free throw, but stole the ensuing rebound from Liz Tommasi under the basket and finished with a lay-in to give the Diplomats a lead it would never relinquish.
The Blue Jays struggled from the field in the first half, shooting just 6-of-31 (19.4%). Despite the poor shooting, Hopkins only trailed the Diplomats by five, 23-18, entering the halftime break.
Senior Alex Vassila led the Blue Jays with 13 points, while teammate Stacy Fairey had 10 points and five rebounds. Additionally, Fatu Conteh finished with six steals and eight rebounds.
Hopkins looks to get back in the win column this Saturday as it travels to Muhlenberg for a 2:00 pm contest. The Mules won the first meeting on December 8, 49-43.
