LEXINGTON, VA - The Johns Hopkins wrestling team split a pair of Centennial Conference matches at Washington & Lee University Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays fell to 20th-ranked NYU, 22-12, in the opener before bouncing back with a 38-6 win over the host Generals. The split moves JHU's record to 3-9 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial. The match against NYU is the latest against a nationally-ranked team for the Blue Jays, who have now wrestled six teams currently ranked in the top 25 and also wrestled Division I Maryland and West Virginia early in the season.
The Violets started quickly against the Blue Jays, winning the first six bouts to take a 19-0 lead. Five of the six matches were won by decision with four of those decided by two points or less. The Blue Jays took three of the last four matches to account for the 22-12 final score. A forfeit victory by Paul Bewak at 125 and wins by decision from juniors Ray Yagloski at 133 and Henry Stauber at 149 provided the 12 points for the Blue Jays.
After dropping the first two matches at 157 and 165 against W&L, the Blue Jays won the next eight bouts to pick up the 32-point win. A 7-5 win by Christian Ostrowski at 174 jump-started the spree for the Blue Jays, who also got a 77-second pin from sophomore Evan Johnson at 197, major decisions from Joey Tilson (285) and Stauber and forfeit wins by Bewak, Yagloski and Duncan Crystal (141) to secure the victory.
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Wednesday, January 30 when the Blue Jays travel to Gettysburg for a Centennial Conference match against the Bullets.
