ALLENTOWN, PA - Sophomore Stacy Fairey had 13 points and six rebounds and freshman Liz Tommasi had 11 points and three steals as the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team defeated Muhlenberg, 52-44, Saturday afternoon to split the season series.
Hopkins (10-9, 8-6 CC) blew the game open midway through the second half when it mounted a 15-2 run to take a 14-point lead with 7:00 minutes to play. Tommasi scored eight points during the run, including her only 3-pointer of the afternoon.
Muhlenberg (11-7, 8-5 CC) did not waver, however, and answered the Blue Jays with an 11-0 run of its own to cut the Hopkins lead to 45-42 with 2:14 to play. Four different players scored for the Mules during the run.
Despite the comeback, the Mules went cold from the field in the final 2:00, and the Blue Jays' Alex Vassila notched two critical blocks down the stretch. Muhlenberg's poor shooting allowed Hopkins to comfortably pull away, as Fairey knocked down four free throw attempts.
The sides were deadlocked, 23-23, after the first half of play, with neither team taking full control of the action. Fairey led all scorers with nine points in the first frame.
The Blue Jays' leading scorer and rebounder, Vassila, had a quiet afternoon, but did manage to score her 900th career point. She is just the 17th player in program history to achieve the milestone.
Muhlenberg was led by 10 points and six rebounds from Leeann Lanza and seven assists from Hannah Rush. The Mules shot just 25% from the field in the game.
Hopkins returns to action on Tuesday in a matchup at Bryn Mawr, before squaring off against Gettysburg on Thursday in Goldfarb Gym.
