BRYN MAWR, PA - Sophomore Ciara McCullagh notched a double-double and senior Alex Vassila had 19 points and nine rebounds to lead the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team past Bryn Mawr, 72-37, Tuesday night in the Class of 1958 Gymnasium.
In her 100th appearance in a Hopkins uniform, Vassila brought down her 800th career rebound to become just the sixth player in program history to achieve the mark. The Blue Jays improved to 11-9 (9-6 CC) with the victory, while Bryn Mawr fell to 1-17 (0-14).
Hopkins stormed out of the halftime break on a 10-0 run and never looked back, opening a 42-14 lead with multiple baskets from Vassila and freshman Liz Tommasi. The Owls managed to shoot 30% in the second half, but the speed and size of the Blue Jays proved too much to handle for the hosts.
The Blue Jays put heavy pressure on the Bryn Mawr ball dribblers, forcing 25 turnovers, and scoring 39 points as a result.
Stacy Fairey and Tommasi also tallied double-figure point totals for Hopkins, scoring 13 and 10 points, respectively. Bryn Mawr was led by Nicolette Parmese, who had 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Hopkins will play host to Gettysburg on Thursday, with tip-off slated for 6:00 pm. The Blue Jay men will play immediately after at 8:00 pm.
