JHU Tops Gettysburg, 23-15, in Centennial Wrestling Action

Jan. 30, 2013

GETTYSBURG, PA - The Johns Hopkins wrestling team got wins in four of the five lightest weight classes, including a pin by top-ranked Paul Bewak at 125, to fuel a 23-15 Centennial Conference victory at Gettysburg Wednesday night. The Blue Jays improve to 4-9 overall and 2-1 in the Centennial, while the Bullets slip to 4-15 overall and 0-3 in the Centennial.

The match started at 285 and Michael Sheehan staked the Bullets to an early 3-0 lead with a 10-4 win over Joey Tilson. As it turned out, that would be the only lead of the night for Gettysburg.

Bewak jumped started the match-deciding spree with his second-period pin of Matt Laux. The win improves Bewak's record to 23-3 on the year, including a perfect 20-0 against Division III opponents.

Ray Yagloski followed Bewak's pin with a win by forfeit to make it 12-3 before the Bullets cut the deficit to 12-6 with a Matt Spano victory by decision (9-4) against Duncan Crystal.

Henry Stauber, Christian Salera and Jody Gowen then ensured the win for the Blue Jays with wins in three of the next four matches. Stauber needed just over six minutes to score a 15-0 technical fall victory over Cody Keane at 149 and Salera added a 9-3 win over Eddie Carroll at 157 to make it 20-6.

The final four bouts were all decided by two points or less with Gowen earning a win for JHU at 174 with a 2-1 overtime victory against Joe Fiore. Manny Markantone (165), Zach Thomson (174) and Jared Leon (197) all scored wins by two-point decisions to account for the final scoring. Leon's 3-1 win over Evan Johnson at 197 came on a takedown in overtime.

Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday when the Blue Jays travel to Ursinus for a Centennial Conference tri-match against Stevens and the home-standing Bears.
