HUNTINGDON, PA - Eastern Sophomore Erin Hillman recorded 13 kills with a .632 hitting percentage, and led Eastern to a 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-16) victory over Hopkins Friday afternoon. The Eagles will advance to play the winner of Cabrini and Christopher Newport, while the 2013 season for the Blue Jays will come to an end. Meagan Donohoe led the Jays with 10 kills, while sophomore Caitlin Callihan hit for .350 with 8 kills.
Hopkins had a nice opportunity to tie the match in the second set after going down 1-0 after the first. Hopkins was in control for the majority of the set, and held as large as a seven point lead after an Ali Cox kill made it 22-15. Eastern crawled its way back into it, as the Blue Jays were plagued by error-ridden play. Despite calling back-to-back timeouts, The Eagles rallied to go on an 8-0 run and take the set 25-23.
After surrendering the second set Hopkins was not able to recover, falling behind early in the third. Despite a few rallies and comeback runs, Eastern held off the Blue Jays to capture a 25-16 win in the third set and 3-0 victory. It was the first time in a NCAA tournament match that Hopkins was swept, despite hitting a program best hitting percentage (.236) in NCAA play.
JHU was in an early hole in the first set, as Eastern raced out to an 11-3 lead after a seven point run. The Jays were just not able to get back into it as the Eagles closed things out for a 25-13 win.
Despite the loss, Hopkins volleyball has a very promising future, with only one senior graduating from this year's team. Today's match was the third straight NCAA appearance for the program, and the team will finish with a winning record (14-13) for the 11th straight season.
