BALTIMORE, MD - Six different players scored, which included four goals in the first 15 minutes, as Hopkins went on to blank Brooklyn 6-0 in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. Senior Christina Convey scored six minutes in, as Pamela Vranis, Hannah Kronick, Kelly Baker, Sydney Teng and Jennie Hall all added goals to give Hopkins its largest-ever margin of victory for an NCAA tournament game. The score also matched the program's record for goals in a NCAA Tournament game, last reached in a 6-1 victory over Eastern Connecticut in 2011.
The Blue Jays did not waste any time in the first half, and Convey converted a chance from Kronick in the 6th minute that banged off the left post and into the net. The assist was her 5th in NCAA Tournament games, which gave her the outright record in Hopkins history. Less than a minute later, Vranis converted a penalty kick for the Jays after Baker was tripped up in the box by a Brooklyn defender.
In the 13th minute, Kronick gave Hopkins a 3-0 lead after collected a rebound from a Vranis shot inside the box. Kelly Baker scored her 13th goal of the season after playing a nicely crossed ball from senior Kylie Fuller into the left corner of the net.
After allowing a shot early in the first half, the Hopkins defense shutdown the Brooklyn attack, not allowing the Bulldogs a single shot for the rest of the match. However, the Hopkins offense was relentless, posting 37 shots in the game and forcing Brooklyn keeper Kimberly Chacko to make 12 saves.
Hopkins was held quiet in the second half, until Teng buried a shot from the left side into the right corner to score her ninth goal of the season. The goal made her the outright leader in Hopkins history in NCAA Tournament goals with six, breaking her previous tie with Paulina Goodman (2008-11) and Allie Zazzali (2007-10). Hall rounded out the scoring for the Blue Jays, converting a penalty kick in the 87th minute after being fouled in the box. With six goals and three assists, Hopkins set a new school record for points in a single NCAA tournament game (21).
In the day's opening match, York (PA) edged Carnegie Mellon University 1-0 to advance to tomorrow's regional final. Freshman Emily Cronise scored the game's only goal in the 26th minute. Hopkins will face the Spartans tomorrow at 1:30 pm at Homewood Field. The winner will advance to the Sweet 16 next weekend.
