BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team jumped out to an 11-point halftime lead, got a career-high 21 points from senior Fatu Conteh and never let visiting Ursinus get closer than six points in the second half as the Blue Jays picked up a 70-58 victory at Goldfarb Gymnasium Saturday afternoon. The win is the third straight for JHU, which improves to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the Centennial Conference. The Bears had a two-game winning streak snapped and slip to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial.
Hopkins led just 22-17 after a Caroline Shimrock jumper for the Bears with 7:26 remaining in the first half, but a jumper by Conteh ignited a 13-7 half-ending run for the Blue Jays, who led 35-24 at the break on the strength of 14-of-23 first-half shooting and eight points by sophomore Liz Tommasi.
While Ursinus never really cut into the deficit in the first nine minutes of the second half, the Blue Jays couldn't quite put the Bears away either and Urinus, which topped defending Centennial champion Gettysburg, 51-33, in its last game, made its run midway through the half.
A three-point by Devin Butchko sliced a 13-point deficit to 10 (45-35) and ignited a 7-0 run that pulled the Bears within six at 45-39 with just over 10 minutes remaining.
The Blue Jays held that six-point lead for just over a minute before Alyssa Fleming's only three-pointer of the game ignited a seven-point run for the Blue Jays that also included two free throws by Conteh and a layup by Tommasi to push the lead back to 13 (52-39) with eight minutes remaining.
Ursinus got the deficit to 11 at 52-41 on a Shimrock jumper with just under seven minutes on the clock, but Hopkins responded with a 12-4 run to go up 63-45 in what eventually became the 12-point victory.
In addition to Conteh's 21-point, seven-rebound effort, the Blue Jays got 12 points and four assists from Tommasi and eight points, seven rebounds and five assists from Haley Bush. The Blue Jay bench again provided a spark as it outscored the Ursinus bench, 28-10.
Jessica Porrada led Ursinus with a game-high 24 points and eight rebounds, but she was the only Bear to score in double figures Hopkins' hot shooting (24-of-49 (.490)) was more than UC could overcome.
