PROVIDENCE, RI - Johns Hopkins got a hat trick from junior
Johnny Beal as the Blue Jays beat the Mercyhurst Lakers, 12-8, in the ninth-place match of the 2013 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championship. The Blue Jays end their season with a 21-10 record - making their second straight 20-win season and third in program history.
It was a tightly contested match in the first half as Hopkins held just a 5-4 lead after 16 minutes. The Blue Jays then turned it up in the third quarter, outscoring the Lakers, 4-1, to take a 9-5 lead heading into the final stanza. The fourth was a draw as both teams scored three goals but the Blue Jays four-goal advantage proved to be too much for the Lakers.
Playing in their final match were senior Thomas de Lyon, Stephen Kingery and Conor Flemming. De Lyon scored two goals, Flemming scored one and Kingery handed out an assist. Sophomore Langdon Froomer also scored a pair of goals and sophomore Kevin Yee handed out a team-high three assists. Junior Danny Ovelar and sophomore Erik Henrikson split time in the game, making six and three saves, respectively.
De Lyon finished the season with career highs in goals (60), assists (24), points (84) and steals (16). He ranks 10th in school history in career points (168), 20th in goals (114), 11th in assists (54) and 16th in steals (54). Kingery finished with a career-high 28 goals and 52 steals, while also handing out 23 assists and totaling 51 points, this season. He ranks eight in program history in career points (184), fifth in assists (98) and steals (163). Flemming concludes his career with 13 goals, 12 assists and 14 steals.
