Johns Hopkins Goes 5-0 at JHU Invitational

BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's fencing team got 12 wins apiece from sophomore Rachel Viqueira and junior Rachel Kalina and the Blue Jays won all five of its matches on Sunday at the JHU Invitational. Hopkins earned wins over NJIT (21-6), Yeshiva (25-2), Virginia (20-7), Army (18-9) and Navy (19-8) to open the year with a 5-0 record.

Hopkins opened with the win over NJIT and got a sweep of the Foil, led by Viqueira and senior Jackie Heath, who combined for six wins. The Blue Jays also took 6-3 wins in the Epee and Sabre to complete the win. Senior Liz Caris and freshmen Katherine Couch and Charlotte Green each won two bouts in the Epee and in the Sabre, Kalina and freshman Nancy Kim each won three bouts.

In the next round, Hopkins dropped two just total bouts en route to the win over Yeshiva. The Blue Jays earned an 8-1 win in the Foil behind three wins from Viqueira. While in the Epee, sophomore Ting Liu and freshmen Rachel Jandak and Nastasia Winey combined to sweep the Maccabees, 9-0. The Sabre saw Kim and sophomore Ji Young Nam win a combined six bouts in the 8-1 JHU win.

Hopkins won a tight contest in the Foil, 5-4, but won the Epee (8-1) and Sabre (7-2) easily to earn the decision over Virginia. Heath went 2-1 and freshman Aviana Duca clinched the win in the final bout in the Foil. Caris and Winey won three bouts apiece in the Epee and Kalina led the way in the Sabre with three wins.

The Blue Jays followed with a win over the Black Knights, winning two of the three weapons. Hopkins cruised to a 9-0 win in the Foil behind three wins apiece from Heath and junior Ilana Regenbogen. The Epee was closer with JHU winning 6-3 as Couch won all three of her bouts. Army won the Sabre by a 6-3 score, but Kalina won all three of her bouts for Hopkins.

The match versus Navy was similar as the Blue Jays won the Foil and Epee, but the Mids claimed the Sabre. Heath once again led the way against Navy, winning all three of her bouts in the 7-2 win. Green and Couch paced Hopkins in the Epee, combining for six of the team's eight wins. Navy pulled out a 5-4 win in the Sabre, despite three wins from Kalina.

Kalina went unbeaten on the day with a 12-0 record and is now 25-1 on the season. Kim also finished with a winning record in the Sabre, going 8-7 on the day. Heath lost just one bout in the Foil, finishing with a 12-1 mark to improve to 21-4 on the season, and is just three wins shy of 250 for her career. Sophomore Abigail Delamater went 9-3 as the Blue Jays went 38-7 in the Foil. Couch led the Jays in the Epee with an 8-1 record on the day and is now 17-3 on the season. Green was second with seven wins, going 7-2 as she improved to 13-6 overall.

Hopkins returns to action on December 8 at the annual Brandeis Invitational in Waltham, MA.
